Travelling by car, motorcycle or bus from the Hotel Carosello you will have a dilemma: whether to turn left and go to Paestum, (25 minutes), the entrance to the Cilentana Coast, and famous worldwide for its ancient Greek temples, or whether to turn right, take the Salerno highway and find yourself in no time along the road that follows the Amalfi Coast, with its splendid views on the Salerno Gulf? It’s difficult to decide! It’s better to dedicate more than one excursion to exploring these zones, which have contributed to the myth of the Campania Felix.
In Paestum, after a visit to the archeological sites, where you can admire the temples of Neptune and Cerere and the Basilica, you can visit the Museum, where you will find documents and relics that range from pre-historical to medieval times, with the most important being the “Tomba del Tuffatore” (“Tomb of the Diver”).
Paestum is not only archeological, but also gastronomical ... don’t miss the mozzarella di bufala, the queen of the table for the zones south of Salerno, or a rich ice-cream in the Temple zone ... and fun, with beaches and locales for a summer you will not forget!
The Amalfi Coast is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Starting from Vietri Sul Mare, famous for its ceramics, you pass Cetara, a small fisherman’s village (don’t miss the tuna and sardines!), Maiori with its beautiful boardwalk, Minori and Atrani, two of the smallest and most beautiful villages of Italy, until you reach Amalfi. “The day of final judgement, for those Amalfitani that go to Paradise, will be a day like all the rest”.
This verse by Renato Fucini is more effective than any postcard to best describe the pearl of the coast, at one time a Marine Republic. The Duomo, the Piazzetta, and the tiny streets in which to lose yourself, will offer you experiences and memories to keep and to share.
But the coast does not end with Amalfi, there is still much more to be seen.
Positano, with its pebble beach, its thousand shops, and its open-air cafes, is a necessary stop, as is Ravello, city of music and beautiful villas, suspended above the sea. Its panorama will take your breath away.
Salerno, the provincial capital, is another stop not to be missed: its urban landscape has been re-evaluated in the past ten years and it has become a lively business center, with a beautiful boardwalk, Via Mercanti, a historical center and the Duomo.
Have you decided to stay another day? Great! Offer yourself a visit to Pompei, with its digs that attract visitors from all over the world, to see the ruins dating back to 79 b.c.
And don’t forget Napoli, Caserta and dulcis in fundo, the islands of Capri and Ischia, which can be reached by boat from the port of Salerno.
